About

I’m Luiza Buscariollo Frehner, a Brazilian-born artist working under the name Bastet. I was born in Brazil, raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and earned my BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. I currently live and work in South Florida.

Working primarily in acrylic, I create surreal and symbolic paintings that explore identity, longing, memory, vulnerability, and human connection. My work often exists within a restrained palette of black, white, and grayscale, interrupted by moments of saturated color, most often red. A recurring red thread moves throughout many of my pieces as a symbol of attachment, tension, devotion, fate, and emotional distance.

I’m drawn to imagery that feels cinematic, quiet, and psychologically charged: mazes, anatomical hearts, birds, masks, flowers, fractured figures, and suited characters moving through sparse spaces. I’m interested in the tension between performance and instinct, softness and structure, intimacy and isolation. Rather than creating direct narratives, I approach painting more like visual poetry, using symbolism and atmosphere to leave room for interpretation.

My recent work has become increasingly distilled and intentional, focusing on restraint, contrast, and emotional weight carried through simple forms and relationships within the image.

I have exhibited work throughout South Florida, including at Arts Garage in Delray Beach, Dandelight Studio, Studio 1608’s Void Show in West Palm Beach, and Salon South Flow in Boynton Beach.
